She found him in a dark corner of the corridor. He was alone, she couldn't here the sharp voices of the Carrows anywhere near.
He sat on the stone floor, gathering things that had fallen out of a black bag. A book with fine leather covers lay there, and bottles with unknown potions had rolled along the wall.
He flinched when her shadow fell over his dark form, and his hands quickly picked up the last things from the floor.
"So you are leaving?" She asked, her voice high-pitched and brittle.
He seemed to avoid her eyes and he didn't answer her. He rose to his feet and put the last bottle in the bag.
"Why do you care?" He said, and turned to leave.
The corridor was silent. Gone was the happy laughter, the voices of hundreds of children. Even in the middle of the day, the corridors were silent. She had certainly had enough of this madness, this EVIL, that had infiltrated their school.
He personified EVIL. Before he had a chance to just walk away, she had grabbed his collar and shoved him into the wall, her wand to his throat.
"Why, Severus?" She said. "Why? I thought I knew you... You were that silent, insecure boy... well, although you were always a lot of trouble, into bad things as you were, yes... But I thought that perhaps, perhaps... "
He didn't meet her eyes, his hair and his black lashes hid his eyes from the world. The coward.
"And when you came back... You were sometimes like a human, almost like a friend... Do you remember? When we fought about Quidditch results? When you teased me, as if... Do you remember when you PRETENDED to be our friend...?? Albus... Albus always said we could trust you... TRUST?! What does that word mean to someone like you?" she asked, not expecting an answer.
He seemed to clench his jaws, still not looking at her. His body was rigid as if he was dead, but under her hand holding his collar, she could feel his pulse racing as if he had been running. This traitor was alive, while Albus now lay dead in the white tomb she visited every single day.
"I wish you were dead instead" she said, letting go of his collar and turning to leave.
"So do I" he whispered.
